Back in my home country.
The air is fresh, the men are good looking (I remain of the opinion that Dutch men are above average tasty) and the cars drive without having to swerve to avoid randomly crossing pedestrians or killer-potholes.
At the airport, waiting for the train to bring me to The Hague, I heard a man on the phone speak Italian and I instinctively eavesdropped. “Gianni, non e giusto, non e guisto, veni prima, non e giusto Gianni...” He went on like this for 5 minutes and then started sobbing. I almost wanted to give him a pat on the back and offer him a cup of coffee and a cigarette, but then I thought that just because I miss my Italian man, it doesn’t mean I should go round and hug Italian strangers. And maybe especially not in this case, since after I had a closer look, I suspected Gianni was breaking up with his boyfriend.
In the train, it was clearly morning rush hour. All suits, ties, polished shoes, attache cases, fresh perfumes and foldable bikes. Strangely familiar atmosphere. It was drizzling when I got out of the train and it was cold, but still, it felt like home. Mom cooked, washed, ironed, pedicured and massaged for the past two days and now I’m almost ready to fly out to Buenos Aires, Ushuaia and to board the Orlova for an 11 day Antarctic cruise, the third leg of my trip.
But let me send you the last pictures of my African (under water) adventures before I go. After this, I promise, I’ll leave you in peace for a while. Even if they have internet access on the South Pole, I don’t think I will be able to type either due to frozen limbs or to too much champagne (remember, I’m travelling with two single women).
