“And my soul was sold with my cigarettes to the blackmarket man” (Khe Sanh, Cold Chisel)

Singaporean public transport buses have TV’s, showing a local channel. As I am on my way to work, the morning news is on. I’m not hearing what they say, because I’m listening to my MP3 player, but I’m looking at the news flashing by.

Nepal. 100 protesters arrested in front of the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. Monks being dragged across the street, a beautiful young woman with long dark hair in tears, screaming, policemen bashing and pushing the crowds…

China. The Olympic flame has arrived in Beijing. I see hundreds of thousands of little red and white flags being waved, somebody descends from an airplane, red carpet rolled out, flashing cameras, elated faces…

United States. Dith Pran died at age 65. He’s a refugee who survived the genocide in Cambodia in the 1970’s. He escaped to Thailand after four years of torture in a labour camp, fled to the US and became a photojournalist. He coined the phrase “Killing Fields” and the horrors of his life were deemed worthy of an Academy Award.

Coincidently, the song playing in my ears is Khe Sanh, by Cold Chisel. The Battle of Khe Sanh took place in Vietnam in 1968. Casualties of this US offensive: 667 Americans wounded, 92 dead and 187 South Vietnamese wounded, 33 dead. It’s estimated that 1.100 North Vietnamese were killed. The battle lasted 14 days. “U.S. military participation in the war would soon be relegated to a defensive stance.” (Stanton, The Rise and Fall of an American Army, p. 246)

Sometimes I just want to go to an imaginary hide-out...
