.. ask me to marry him, nor did I ask him. We went to the Maldives, we didn't elope and it wasn't our honeymoon... Just to manage your expectations... ;-) Not that we enjoyed it any less without being married or engaged... :-)

But let me start at the beginning of what I want to tell you.

Two weeks ago, I left for Hong Kong on a business trip. Even though I get to travel a fair bit around the region, I still enjoy it, especially to Hong Kong! It's such a dynamic city, I love the buzz! On Friday I decided to stay one extra night, so I could join a birthday bash organised by a colleague for her husband. And what a night it was... Met loads of new people from all over the world, had a wonderful dinner, danced through the night... (see first picture set). Hong Kong is great! .

The next day, I flew back to Singapore, landed at 5 pm, raced back home from the airport, unpacked, repacked and was back at the airport at 7.30 pm to check in for our flight to the Maldives. What a rush! (in every sense of the word!). Lucky for me, all I really needed was a bikini, my sun glasses and a sarong... how much do you need on a tropical island? ;-)

5 hours later, we landed in Male, where stormy weather awaited us... We found out that it was actually the wettest season of the year... but even so, we can't complain about our tan!

Anyway, about the flora and fauna of the Maldives...

- Manta's, sharks, turtles, Napoleon fish, beautiful corals, etc... of course, the underwater world is what it was all about... what a fantastic sea life! Couldn't get enough of it! The redtooth trigger fish must have thought the same, because there were thousands and thousands of them... every diving spot, along every reef... they must have been at it like bunny rabbits just before we arrived... ;-)
- Honeymooners: a special type of breed as well, although very common on the Maldives. They walk hand in hand permanently, giggle a lot, do lots of hugs & kisses in the swimming pool, and even while scubadiving they are stuck to each other like there's no tomorrow... please! She walks around in bikini pants with "just married" on the backside, he can't get his eyes off her... Extremely interesting to observe!
- Hermit Crabs: how cute are they! Little ones, big ones, in pointy shells, round shells, coned shells, with white shells, brown shells, shiny shells... the beach was littered with them, crawling under everywhere, hiding as soon as you point at them! So funny! You all know how I feel about pets, but I would love to have a handful of those at home... ;-)
- Japanese: I don't think any Japanese people read my blog, if so, I do apologise profusely beforehand... But Japanese people are soooo strange! We were invited by the resort on behalf of a Japanese couple that we didn't even know, to attend their Maldivian wedding ceremony. Some staff member clapping and drumming, someone chanting incomprehensible words (and the groom could not understand a word either, I could read that much from his face) and then everybody taking pictures of them... including the handful of resort guests, who like us, decided to accept the invitation... How odd... not exactly the wedding I would have in mind... but then again, this Japanese bride probably didn't walk around in a pink bikini with just married on her bum the next day... There were quite a lot of Japanese couples at the resort actually, so we got to observe them well all week... ;-)
- Bougainvillea and Frangipani: all over the island, how pretty, how fresh, how colourful! What would a tropical resort be without these flowers...

Hmmm, hope you get the picture... if not, just click on the second link and let the photos do the talking... Even though it rained and stormed a lot, there were plenty of moments to take good pictures and the divemaster also took a few under water...

Oh, and did I mention that there was actually a tsunami warning while we were there? The strong earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, which fortunately did not claim too many casualties, was enough cause for Indonesia to call for a tsunami alarm around the region... We did keep an eye on the sea... but where do you go if the ocean actually retracts? Climb into the highest palmtree? Well, lucky for us it all turned out to be false alarm and we happily carried on drinking our cocktails and observing honeymooners and Japanese...

This was truly a dream holiday (as in the type you dream about, but also the type where you have a lot of time to dream, as there is pretty much nothing else to do but diving overthere) and I hope you all get the chance to go there one time in your life! If you already have, a second time then!

Sweet dreams and so long!

x

Yaisa
