… warm & bubbly in our jacuzzi!

Who will be joining us for next year’s New Year’s Day dive? In any case, we wish you all a sparkling and eventful 2007 and hope that it brings you everything you could wish for!

For those interested, I am finally able to upload pictures from my camera, so check out the selection I’ve made for you. It’s a summary of what we’ve been up to since our last weeks in Amsterdam. As you can see, we have started off 2007 rather nicely.

If the link doesn't work, you can copy the entire address (delete any spaces) into you address bar.

On the 29th of December, the movers came in with our shipment from Holland and we spent the holidays unpacking, sorting out our things and getting it all stuffed into cupboards & closets (we have a drastic shortage of storage space, so antique furniture shops, here we come!!!). Everything including our skis came over without any problems (and don't laugh about the skis, we just might go for a skiing trip next year in South Korea :-))

On the 30th of December however, we ventured out to IKEA… No, we’re not ashamed to admit it. Apparently "furnished" has a broad definition, because we had to buy a lot of stuff that we actually left for in Amsterdam for our tennants. And when you need plates, glasses, pots, pans, drying racks, hangers, duvets, pillows, bedlinnen, wastebins and shoe racks… where else can you go??? Well, I also had a quick peak in the huge Carrefour here in town… not bad either if you need to get a new household!

New Year’s Eve was really VERY sober compared to our excesses of the last few years. We were invited to a party at an Indian colleague’s house, where we had a lovely dinner, met some new people and did not see any fireworks because of the big tower between the balcony and Marina Bay where all the fireworks took place. There was no champaign either, but they had this home Karaoke set, so we had a good laugh singing a few songs (my good old London Stanhope Tavern experience came in handy there!). I think we were home by 1.00 am so fast asleep by the time Europe celebrated the coming of 2007. We didn’t mind missing out on the usual debaucheries though… the IKEA trip had worn us out anyway.

And we needed to be fit to unpack some more of course! After a nice & refreshing dive on the 1st of January, we spent the two remaining days of the holidays decorating our house and making it “our” home. Some picture frames here and there, our familiar candleholders, a few scented bags in the wardrobes, scrubbing the kitchen a bit more, installing the computer (and finally uploading the pictures) and of course all the calendars, photo’s and other gagdets we got from you when leaving Holland. After two nights, it already feels like Ohm… ehh, home.

A little more about our house; as you might be able to tell from the pictures, the livingroom is a bit dark, but with a few special lamps and mirrors, it’s all looks pretty good. The guestroom is ready for use and we’ve devirginised the kitchen (yes, I’ve actually used the kitchen to heat up take away soup and make some fresh fruitjuice with my juicer!). The kitchen is actually relatively big for Singapore kitchens, but I can’t promise I’ll be cooking a lot (Timmo can certainly promise he won’t be cooking at all).

The location of our complex is even better than we had imagined. In a 5 to 10 minutes radius from our house, there are tens of eating places, ranging from very cheap & local foodcourts to excellent Japanese & Thai restaurants. McDonalds, McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and the Pizza Hut are all to be found as well, just as a local coffee house, a Starbucks, a Haagen Dasz, a local fruit & vegetable shop run by and old Indian lady who could use a shave around the chin, a very posh Wine Shop and much more. Of course there are also two supermarkets around the corner and all sorts of little shops for this and that. Basically, it’s great! And as we’re really close to the sea, we actually leave our doors and windows open most of the time to enjoy the breeze, rather than living in a recycled air container.

Speaking of fresh air, Timmo cycled to work today (and lost 5 liters of sweat doing that). I however took the taxi, because I had to carry his clean clothes to the office, as well as some little presents for colleagues who had given us Christmas goodies (which apparently is something you do here around Christmas). But I will get on that bicycle some day… I have to if I want to try all the restaurants in town!

So, today is our first working day of the year. The 2nd of January was a public holiday because the Hindu holiday Hari Raya Haji fell on a Sunday, so we got the Tuesday off to compensate… Not bad hey? They don't do that in Holland, that's for sure!

Anyway, we are looking forward to many exciting challenges both at work (ABN AMRO to conquer Asia!) and personal (making new friends, learning Chinese, running the Singapore marathon…). We can’t wait to welcome you in our new home or to discover Asia with you.

Lots of love,

Timmo & Yaisa

PS. In picture no. 0, right above us on the 1st floor in between the palm trees, you can see a large parasol… that's our terrace and behind it, our house!
